Stats & Facts- Atlantic Championships @ Centre for Speed

Last weekend the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series made its only stop of 2015 at the Centre for Speed in Shediac to contest the 7th and final race in the 2015 season. This race would also be the 26th in series history, and 6th at the Centre for Speed. Matt Watson continued his dominance, and swept the season after winning the feature win. Watson is now the sole owner of many series records, but which ones exactly? Quite a few!

  • With the feature win, Matt Watson scored his 7th consecutive feature victory. That breaks James Matchett’s record, which previously was 6 consecutive feature victories.
Checkered flag for Matt Watson! He's the 2015 champion!
  • Watson became just the 2nd driver to sweep every feature race in a season. Matchett did it back in his 2nd championship season in 2013.
  • Watson earned his 8th career victory, putting him 1 back from tying Matchett for Most Career Feature Wins. Matchett has 9, and if Watson competes in a couple races in 2016, it’s possible that he could tie, and break that record.
  • Watson won at the Centre for Speed in just his 1st start at the track. He becomes just the 3rd driver to win a feature race at every track that the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series competes at. James Matchett & Amanda Wheatley have also won at every track, in feature races. Chris Wilson has won races at every track too, but he’s only won feature races at the Centre for Speed.
  • Watson officially is the 2015 champion, becoming the 3rd champion in series history. His championship performance was the most dominant though, as he had the most points scored by a champion with 326 points. That beats Amanda Wheatleys 322 last year.
  • With his 11th career top 5, Watson is now 3rd for Most Feature Top 5’s, surpassing James Matchett’s 10.
Chris Wilson is back on the podium, with a 2nd place finish!
  • Chris Wilson snapped his 2 race streak of bad luck, as the Blue Deuce found itself back on the podium with a 2nd place finish. This was the 19th top 5 of his career; to extend his series record.
  • Wilson finished 3rd in Points in 2015, down 1 spot from his 2nd place finish in 2014.
  • Courtney O’Blenis substituted for Jared Tozer at the Centre for Speed. It was her 3rd career start, and she scored her 2nd career top 5 with a 3rd place finish. She is now tied for 13th on the Most Career Top 5’s list.
  • Thanks to O’Blenis’s 3rd place run, Jared Tozer was able to finish 6th in points by just 1 point over Kyle Maher. This is an improvement from 10th place in 2014 for Tozer.
  • Steven Curtis ended 2015 with a 4th place run; the 10th top 5 run of his career. This ties him for 4th for Most Career Top 5’s, with James Matchett & Mark Ferguson.
  • Curtis finished 2nd in points, which is a career best for the 4th year driver. It’s an improvement from 5th in points in 2014.
  • Mark Ferguson snapped a streak of 3 consecutive DNF’s in features, which was a series record. Ferguson ended his season on the right track, with a 5th place finish. That his 10th career top 5 finish, tying him for 4th for Most Career Top 5’s.
For the first time in 3 years, Courtney O'Blenis got behind
the wheel of a mini cup car. She picked up a 3rd place finish.
  • Ferguson fell back 1 spot in overall points position, finishing 4th in 2015, compared to 3rd in his rookie year.
  • Finishing 6th in the Feature was Kyle Maher, which came right after his 3rd place run in his heat race. Maher ended his rookie season 7th in points.
  • Mike Weagle scored a career best finish, winning his Heat race in a photo finish over Matt Watson. It was Weagle’s first career Mini Cup win.
  • Weagle ended up finishing 5th in points in his rookie year, after finishing 7th during the feature at the Centre for Speed.
  • Kirk Sheasgreen finished 8th at the Centre for Speed after more bad luck. 8th is where he finished in points, for the 2nd year in a row.
  • Dave Griffin finished 9th after a feature wreck. After purchasing a car mid-season, Griffin finished 11th in points after starting 3 races in his rookie season.
  • On the mic for the series was Tim Terry, filling in for regular announcer John O’Shea. Tim did an awesome job and we thank him for stepping up and filling in!

Records Broken as Watson Crowned Mini Cup Champ, & Atlantic Champ!

Clean Sweep! Matt Watson won the 7th feature of the year
Saturday, as he officially won the 2015 championship.
Get out the broom, because Matt Watson made it a clean sweep Saturday, winning his record breaking 7th consecutive feature race Saturday at the Centre for Speed, to sweep the 2015 ESMCS season, and become the Atlantic Champion for the Mini Cup division. Watson held off hard charging drivers including Chris Wilson, Courtney O’Blenis, & Steven Curtis on a Green-White-Checkered Restart to take the 20 lap feature at the Centre for Speed. This came after Watson finished 2nd in the heat race in a photo-finish, losing just his 3rd race of the year. By winning 15/18 races and racking up 326 points, Watson’s 2015 season will go down as the most dominating season in series history.

Wilson gave it all that he had, but he had nothing for Watson, forcing him to settle for a 2nd place finish to wrap up the year. Wilson previously won at the Centre for Speed in 2012, as had Courtney O’Blenis, who was subbing for Jared Tozer Saturday. O’Blenis started at the back and drove to a 3rd place finish, in just her 3rd series start, and 1st start since her win in 2012. Steven Curtis finished 4th, which was good enough to hang onto 2nd in points by a mere 2 points. Rounding out the top 5 was Mark Ferguson, who picked up his first top 5 finish in 3 months, and ended a streak of 3 consecutive DNF’s; that was as good as a win for Ferguson who held on to 4th in points in his sophomore season.

A number of drivers faced problems during the 20 lap feature. Rookies Kyle Maher and Mike Weagle failed to finish, after they faced mechanical problems during the race. They finished 6th and 7th respectively. Kirk Sheasgreen started on the pole and led lap 1, but when a caution came out after the completion of lap 1, another car made contact with Sheasgreen as they didn’t realize the yellow was out. That would damage Sheasgreen’s car enough to end his night. Rounding out the field was Dave Griffin, who was collected in the lap 1 wreck, hitting the wall hard after trying to avoid the incident.

(Left-Right) Matt Watson, Chris Wilson, & Courtney O'Blenis
were the Podium Finishers at the Centre for Speed.
A total of 2 yellows slowed the race. The first was the lap 1 yellow, which occurred when Mark Ferguson spun around in turn 4, and collected Griffin. The other was a self-spin by Steven Curtis on lap 19. Curtis was running 3rd at the time. There was a total of 2 lead changes among 3 drivers. Sheasgreen led lap 1 before being the incident under yellow. Chris Wilson got the lead on that restart and led 2 laps, before Watson grabbed the lead and paced the final 17 laps of the race.

The 10 lap heat race was an exciting show that went caution free. Mike Weagle picked up his 1st career Mini Cup victory by winning the race over Matt Watson in a photo finish. Kyle Maher finished the heat race in 3rd, while Chris Wilson & Courtney O’Blenis rounded out the top 5.

The season is now complete for the Eastern Super Mini Cup Series. Matt Watson will officially be crowned the 2015 champion at the upcoming banquet. The date for the banquet is TBD. Stay tuned in the upcoming days for voting for the 2015 Eastern Super Mini Cup Series Year End Awards!
